This paper presents a self-paced reading experiment comparing the processing of subject-extracted relative clauses (SRCs) and object-extracted relative clauses (ORCs) in supportive contexts in Chinese. It is argued that lack of a consistent pattern in the literature for the comparison between Chinese SRCs and ORCs is due to potential temporary ambiguity in these constructions in null contexts. By placing the materials in contexts biased towards a relative clause (RC) interpretation , we limit the effects of temporary ambiguity. The results of the experiment demonstrate that SRCs are read more slowly than ORCs in supportive contexts. These results provide evidence for working memory-based sentence processing theories whereby processing difficulty increases for connecting sentence elements that are further apart. Some convergent evidence that strengthens these conclusions comes from recent research on aphasic populations where a dissociation between English and Chinese RC processing has been revealed: whereas English aphasic patients have more difficulty with ORCs and Chinese aphasic patients have more difficulty with SRCs (Su, Lee, & Chung, 2007). Taken together, these results support the idea that sentence processing is constrained by working memory limitations. the audience at the CUNY conference on sentence processing at Chapel Hill, NC, 2008, and two anonymous reviewers for their comments on an earlier draft of this paper. Comprehending Chinese Relative Clauses in Context: Thematic Patterns and Grammatical Functions

Processing asymmetries between subjectand object-extracted relative clauses (RCs) have been reported in various languages. This paper examines whether locality or one’s experience of canonical thematic patterns better predicts the processing of head-final RCs by manipulating thematic patterns in the contexts. Two self-paced reading experiments of relative clauses preceded by contexts were condu...

Ambiguity in the processing of Mandarin Chinese relative clauses: One factor cannot explain it all

This study addresses the question of whether native Mandarin Chinese speakers process and comprehend subject-extracted relative clauses (SRC) more readily than object-extracted relative clauses (ORC) in Mandarin Chinese. Presently, this has been a hotly debated issue, with various studies producing contrasting results. Using two eye-tracking experiments with ambiguous and unambiguous RCs, this ...

Sentence Processing Among Native vs. Nonnative Speakers: Implications for Critical Period Hypothesis

The present study intended to investigate the processing behavior of 2 groups of L2 learners of English (high and mid in proficiency) and a group of English native speakers on English active and passive reduced relative clauses. Three sets of tasks, an offline task, and 2 online tasks were conducted. Results revealed that the high-proficiency group’s performance was the same as that of the nati...

Subject Preference in the Processing of Relative Clauses in Chinese

A controversy in the sentence processing literature regarding relative-clause processing was raised by Hsiao and Gibson’s (2003) study of Chinese relative clauses. Their study suggested that, contrary to the patterns found in all other languages, Chinese relative clauses showed a processing preference for object extractions. This result posed a challenge to sentence processing theories that att...

Chinese L2 Learners’ Use of Structural and Lexical Information in Processing English Subject and Object Relative Clauses

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a significant difference in the use of syntactic and semantic information, or the combination of both in Chinese learners’ processing strategies of English subject and object relative clauses. It also aims at determining whether a relationship exists in Chinese speakers’ L1 and L2 processing strategies. Thirty three advanced and 27 le...
